Set up in 2005, Woodlesford in Bloom was the brain child of local councillors Smith and Galdas, who had seen the success of the scheme in other areas of Leeds such as Barwick in Elmet and Rothwell.
Their appeal in the local press for volunteers to come and help tidy up and improve the village attracted the attention of Jonathan Davis who, as well as being a highly experienced employee of the parks and Countryside department, was a concerned Woodlesford resident and he became a driving force behind making this happen.
The first meeting gathered together people from all over the village. We were an eclectic mix of interested residents including parents, retired and working business people, housewives, representatives from local businesses, several local teachers, representatives from the council and our local councillors, which gave us a wealth of skills and support to call on and we found that everyone had the same vision, to restore Woodlesford to its former glory.
Did you know for example that our canal side is a national award winner? Or that the country park is an amazing conservation area, that Woodlesford Park is being upgraded and that proposed picnic areas and woodland planting will make the reclaimed area behind The Maltings a new local beauty spot? Have you enjoyed the planters up and down Holmsley Lane and Church Street this year?
On these pages you can follow our progress and learn more about what you can do to become involved in the improvements we are planning to upgrade our village.
We have quickly discovered if we all do a bit, it is amazing what we can aspire to!We meet on the first Monday of every month at the Two Pointers Pub on Church Street at 7.45 p.m. Meetings usually last about an hour and we discuss our future plans for that month.
We also meet each Wednesday morning at 10.00 a.m. to carry out work as needed around the village in the Two Pointers car Park and occasional Saturdays to accommodate those who work during the week if necessary or they need the fresh air and exercise!
